Statement on Tiny Tiny Homes at St James Park

"I’m determined to ensure that the City of Toronto uses every tool available to solve homelessness with shelter, housing, and care."

Working with the Mayor, I am pleased to share that City divisions will work with Tiny Tiny Homes to find a resolution. I learned through social media that the non-profit had been issued a legal letter of enforcement for the removal of five small sheltering structures at St. James Park, and spoke with builder Ryan Donais yesterday evening and today about finding a solution.

In 2023 and 2024, I moved motions—which were adopted by City Council—to explore tiny homes and other micro-mobile shelter options to tackle our housing & homelessness crisis. As the Chair of the City’s Economic and Community Development Committee, I have consistently advocated for exploring all options to provide shelter and transitional housing for people who are experiencing homelessness, including tiny home options.

For a year I have made a number of requests to City Divisions for updates on this work, including asking for an evaluation of possible sites for micro-shelters to be located, as well as identifying partner organizations. I have been informed that this work is ongoing.

I’m determined to ensure that the City of Toronto uses every tool available to solve homelessness with shelter, housing, and care. I look forward to continuing the conversation with Tiny Tiny Homes, City staff, Mayor Olivia Chow, and local Councillor Chris Moise about the path forward.
